hello again,
heres a good question that i thought of while i looked at this forum after a bit of an absence. can someone tell me seriously what they think is the point of making films. i know people have different reasons as to why they make films but you all do i presume so i want to know a collective reason as to the point of films existance. this is not an individual opinion question, its a group discussion question. maybe we can stop bandying about little opinions and start to come up with some tangable intelligent answers based on our own reality, not the reality of people who have big cars and drive around on hollywood boullevard. i live in japan and since being here i have noticed that almost every film?@i have seen has some basis in real social situations or problems, even battle royal, so why are so many people making movies about zombies that have nothing to say. i love zombie movies, my favourite films include dawn of the dead because i can relate to the actions of the charecters and that movie had something to say about people in general and the way that societies act. zombies attack my mates garden shed doesnt. i know movies are entertainment but so is masturbating and thats alot more fun, why dont you all do that instead? by the way i will give 10,000yen to the first person who can call me a cunt.

Well, I don't want to insult you, or really collect of the $120 Canadian that would transfer to. But anyway. Ok. You say this is a group discussion thing, and not an opinion one. But it would require some basis of opinion in order to initiate a discussion. What is the point in making films? As of right now, in my early filmmaking stages, it is fun. Pure and simple.
If something I've made was fun to make, there is more chance it is fun to watch, because that is what I'm going for. No awards to be won, and nothing of profound significance to express, just pure fun. But eventually, I hope to become more familiarized with the process and more adept, and then be able to express what I want through this medium. Maybe some of the more advanced filmmakers like 'Despin' or 'Generic Skinhead' have something to say, and if so, more power to them.
Not all movies are based in the hollywood boulevard lifestyle. And some generic Zombie movie might not have anything to say, but you didn't make it, and you don't have to watch it. Everyone is going to have their own point for making films, so a concensus is unlikely. And as far as your views of masturbation vs filmmaking, maybe you should come back and post here when you would rather spend a day with a camera, lights and an idea, as opposed to cheap porn and lubricant.

See, you started off so well, being all philosophical, and then you spoil it by going on about how zombie films are rubbish.
Naughty, naughty....
Paul
PS. Zombies have feelings too. Err, actually they probably don't, do they?
I'll shut up now.
PPS CUNT. I hope Despin doesn't travel back in time and beat me to it... d'Oh!

Orgasms, especially lame self-induced ones, last only for a few seconds. Even short films last for five minutes!
Easy choice.

Hey there.
I love movies. I love watching them. I love writing them, I love making them. I love telling stories. I play the guitar and when I was in a band it was the exact same thing. I love music, I love writing, listening and perfoming it. Its all entertainment.
I am an entertainer. That is what I do. It doesnt matter if im sat in a pub talking, playing the guitar or screening a movie I just love to entertaining people.
Like Willy Wonker I was born to do it.
Now I maybe be a good entertainer. I mey a bad entertaner but thats for you to decide not me.
Despin out.

I guess your not asking what I think but what the worth of movies are. I'd say that, born through millenia of story telling, humans are attracted to stories like moths to a flame. Unlike words, which lead you deep into the world of the imagination, images and sound, when brought together, pull deeper at our emotions, giving us a window through which to look at our own existence, who we are, and what we think life is about.
In short there is nothing nearer to the actual art of sculpting reality itself... than movies. Until virtual reality kicks off, film remains the best medium with which to explore the life we are living.

Asking a filmmaker why he likes to make movies is like asking a musician why he writes a song, why a painter paints, why a dog pees on fire hydrants... well, you get the idea. At the risk of giving an opinion, its what people like us do. If you go back waaaaaayyyy back, early man painted on cave walls. Why? Maybe it was to record history, or maybe the guy just liked to tell stories. I think that's why we do this... we're 21st century story tellers. Only now, we have a more dynamic means of conveying that message.
Well, I guess that's why some of us make movies. The rest of us got into it for the chicks!
